In Ms. Di Nuzzo and Ms. Proto’s Class, children were introduced to the Seesaw app…a tool to showcase what they are doing in school. Seesaw gives parents the opportunity to feel closer to the classroom. Seesaw gives parents a chance to share in their child’s lessons and activities. In the photos, students are navigating through their first hands on activity, complete with selfie taking.

This month in PE at Wells Road classes are starting lacrosse. The students are very excited to learn some new skills! We are learning how to properly hold the stick, how to scoop and how to cradle. Next up we will begin learning how to pass and catch with a little wall ball and some other fun activities! Students are enjoying this unit!

4th graders are setting goals and working hard to achieve them as writers! Students are using a writing checklist as they elaborate on the heart of their story, including the use of techniques such as writing with a storytelling voice, adding dialogue and precise details.
Students in Mrs. Lagano's science class are studying astronomy and trying to explain the phenomena of the super blue blood moon. After an exploration of stars, students are now investigating the phases of the moon. Each student is keeping a nightly moon journal with a sketch of the moon. Soon, the classes will define the phases of the moon and be able to explain its connection to the super blue blood moon. Students in Mrs. Martin’s Language Arts Class are sharpening their reading and thinking skills in Interpretation Book Clubs. Students are learning to use their book clubs as places where they can try out ideas, be challenged and engage in rich conversations using reasons and text evidence to support their ideas. Here’s an example of one way a book club reflected on their thinking about the book Wish by Barbara O’Connor.
Last week, in Mrs. Moran’s room, students are working on visualization as a language comprehension strategy. Language comprehension is necessary for students to understand what they hear and to understand what they read. Students are learning what visualization is and why we are doing it.
What is visualization?
Visualization is making a picture in your mind.
Why visualize?
Some students read words accurately, but have trouble understanding what they read. They may also have difficulty following directions. Words seem to go “in one ear and out the other”.
Students are learning what visualizing means and how it helps them listen and read. Creating an imaged gestalt while listening helps them to understand and remember language.

Dr. MacDonald has recently started the Banana Splits group on C days. Banana Splits is a school-based group program for students who have experienced parental separation/divorce or death. Banana Splits provides a safe place for children to express their feelings about this life change. Both Mr. Whitten and Mrs.Toth were out at different times last week – both third grade classes wrote adventure stories about where they thought Mr. Whitten was and where they thought Mrs. Toth was when they were not in their classrooms. (These stories were inspired by the book Miss Nelson is Missing.) and are now on display, on the hallway bulletin boards for other classes to read as they pass through the halls.
Wells Road will wear blue on Monday, 10/7/19, to participate in the World Day of Bullying Prevention. Let's put an end to bullying! Remember . . . Kindness Matters!
Vision/Hearing screenings: Annual vision screenings for all grades will be done October 22 for vision and October 24 for hearing. Parents will be notified if a referral to your doctor is needed. Please call with any questions or concerns.
We can still use volunteers to help make the days run smoother. October 22 has two shifts available at 8:30-12:00 and 12:30-3:30 and October 24 form 8:30-12. Please contact me vie email or phone if you can help.

We're finishing our launch unit in the Media Center - and hoping our kids can answer the question: How can you be a creator/maker/contributor?
Mrs. Cloukey’s fourth grade writers are working hard to create realistic fiction characters with desires and difficulties. Students in Mr. Faber's class explore and comment on each other's work on Seesaw. Seesaw is an educational platform that allows students to share work, ideas, and feedback with each other. It also allows parents to get a glimpse inside their child's classroom through their child's online journal.

As students practice Spanish language in routines, songs, stories and games, they also show how to be kind (ser amable) while laughing and learning together!
